Eric and Steve Hjortness win NEWGA Best Ball, with a little help from above!
Eric and Steve Hjortness won their first NEWGA Best Ball championship at the beautiful and challenging Pine Hills Country Club. They defeated the team of John Smith and Jon Kaufman in the finals by the score of 3/1. The brothers Hjortness played exceptionally well throughout the entire tournament. Steve clinched the final match with a "heavenly" second shot to within two feet on the difficult 17th hole. Both brothers were determined to win the event and take the championship trophy home to their mother. It was only two weeks ago that their father (Ivan) passed away, after suffering a sudden heart attack. For those of us who knew Ivan (member of NEWGA's Lake Arrowhead Golf Club), he will be remembered as a man inspired by and having great enthusiasm for the game of golf. His inspiration, enthusiasm and spirit were with his two sons throughout the entire tournament. They clearly were the best team. With Father's Day coming next weekend, I can not think of a better team victory.
